Methodist Preacher to save the planet!

Not much time to blog as I have been working away for a few days - but blow me down what a sensation when I open the Methodist Recorder!

A Methodist Preacher in Yorkshire called John D Anderson is (according to page two) engaged "in bid to save planet".

He has set up the modestly named "John D Anderson Solar Power Station" which despite reading Barry Weetman's article several times I still haven't the faintest idea what it does.

The local preacher in Yorkshire, according to the Recorder who may just have got a little ahead of the story, wants to save the entire planet - this certainly puts into perspective my puny idea -one that I think was shared by John Wesley - that our preaching may save a few souls.

Is it just me at the end of a difficult week, or have we Methodists somehow lost the entire plot never mind the planet?

Mr. Anderson has done two, not very new, things and, unless he has some new twist on them or has made them himself, he really shouldn't be naming them after himself or anyone else.

He has a Photo-voltaic cell, more popularly known as the key part of a solar panel. Solar powered calculators use them as do datellites. They generate electricity. The second thing he has installed is a thermal panel. Essentially, coiled tubes in a black box, these absorb heat and transfer it to water. This can be used for running hot water and heating. This latter is most effective in summer, but does work on fine days in winter. It helps.

The increased use of solar panels may well be a good thing, but the 'carbon footprint' involved in making, transporting and maintaining them is unknown. It's a less polluting form of power, probably, but I do not know what disposal issues may be involved.

Will it save the planet? Volcanoes and sunspots put our efforts at 'climate change' in the shade!

Can we save the planet? God will create a new heaven and a new earth - or don't we believe that any more? What other promises might He not keep?
